working from home

Today I been up since after 07:00 and started working at around 07:30 at my desk at home.  I am still on sick leave because of the operation yesterday.

It has just gone 09:20 and I now only feel like breakfast, a cigarette and a shower. All things I would have needed to do two hours ago already in order to get to work on time.

I always thought that I would be unproductive if I were to work from home; seems I am even more so productive than ever.  No ringing telephone, no pestering colleagues, no stressed out academics asking for unnecessary things to do, no student queries etc.

Think about the time we spend preparing for the office in the morning, in the case of a female, this could be up to an hour. Then if you traveling from say northern suburbs into Cape Town, you will be in traffic for at least 40 minutes. That is wasted time that could be used for productivity? Now double that time because you still have to get home in the evening.

I could do this everyday -  Life is great, but just for today that is. Tomorrow it is back to the hell hole…

One Response to “working from home

  1. Working at home saves a lot of time and petrol, breakfast alone takes me anything between 30 minutes to 60 minutes in the morning (I eat a LOT ok :p), working from home means I can have breakfast while reading my mail (or actually doing work), checking my twitter stream and reading blogs. Also, I don’t have to worry about looking presentable, just take a 5 minute shower, jump in a pair of shorts, a torn shirt and I’m ready for the day whereas working in Stellenbosch (last year) meant waking up in the early hours to leave early, to not get stuck in traffic and altogether waste about R1500 a month in petrol costs while spending 2 hours a day on the road and having to spend time making myself presentable in the mornings, bleh, what a schlep, working from home is fantastic!
