Ever forgotten a birthday?

I tend to forget birthdays and depend on a list or some sort of recuring appointment in my Google Calendar, to serve as a reminder. In turn the scheduled event will send an sms reminder to my mobile phone.

I found a way to add birthdays from the Facebook Birthday Calendar application, to your Google Calendar.

Step by step instructions:

(Update* March 2010 :please note there is an update to the process to follow – I explained it in the comments below)

Login to Facebook then click on Settings > Applications Settings,fb-application-settings

Click on Birthday Calendar, open-birthday-calendar

Click on Settings,3-settings-for-bday-cal

Click on Import/ Export Tool,4-click-import-export

Chose your preferred Exporting format (iCal or .csv)

I chose Export to CSV Format (.csv),5-choose-ical-or-csv

Save the .csv file into your file system i.e. Desktop,6-save-csv-file

Now you need to log in to your Google Calendar.

On the left hand side of your Calendar, Click Create, 7-gcalendar-create-new-calendar

Now give your New Calendar a Name e.g. Birthdays, a description, 8-creating-new-calendar1

Then hit the Save button,9-saving-new-calendar

You now need to import your .csv file from the desktop and add it to your newly created calendar Birthdays.

Click on Add, then click Import Calendar,10-add-another-calendar

Then:

1. Browse for your .csv file,

2. Select your Calendar from the drop down menu, then

3. Click Import,12-browse-choose-and-import1

The importing process may take a few minutes, depending on your .csv file size.

Wait until you see the Successfully Imported notification.13-successful-import

To view individual Birthday events, click on your Calendar Birthdays, 14-finished

Notes and Tips:

  • If in future, your friendship with “Person” ends on Facebook, note that Person“‘s Birthday,  will still appear in your Google calendar. You will have to manually remove the event from your calendar.
  • Try adding birthday events manually to your new Birthdays Google Calendar – that way you can keep updating just one calendar instead of creating multiple Birthday Calendars.

  1. To add an update to this:
It will only work if you have "alerts" set up for the selected contacts. If you do not have alerts set up, then it will not export to your calendar; only events that you have replied to will be exported.
Sadly, there is not a bulk tool that I was able to find to add an alert to all of your friends at one time. This task must be done manually, and if you have many friend then it will certainly take some time. Better to only select those you really care about being notified about! :D

That's awesome! I only had to skim read it and I still got it working in minutes – on the downside, my calendar is going to nag me ever other day that it is someone's birthday :)

Thanks for the easy to follow tute

  3. Hi there Aaron.

As both Facebook and Google made changes to the layout of their pages, there are slight changes to the process:

Besides logging on to Facebook, I typed “BIrthday Calendar” in the search bar on top

When Birthday Calendar opens up, you still click SETTINGS and then you click ‘Export your Calendar’

Then same steps apply up until you get to google calendar – create your calendar and save it but then you DONT CLICK CREATE click SETTINGS to be able to import the file that you saved.

I tested it and it works – go try and come tell us again how it was…

This doesn’t work. It only exports events on your Facebook calendar, not any birthdays.
