Yeah exactly. That was my first question too; What the hell is hip hop education?
No! It’s not that latest infomercial on TV attempting to sell us an exercise video; its some hip hop movement exercise.
The Faculty of Hip Hop is a non-profit organisation based in Cape Town that uses hip hop culture as a tool for youth upliftment and promoting sustainable development in various communities. This organisation that started back in 2003 has been doing positive works in the community for only just five years; Five years and has just registered the organisation under section 21 of the Companies Act 71 of 1973 as a company for public benefit, in youth upliftment and development in a social, artistic and community context. *Applaud* Now registered under Hip Hop Education SA (HHESA).

There is some video footage I found on You Tube showing you the type of work done by this organisation. Truly inspiring view. This works in collaboration with Concious Connectionz. In these videos you will learn how the youth open up to these leaders and talk about HIV/AIDS, Substance abuse etc. I quote from one the kids saying: In class the teacher preaches to us and we don’t get a chance to be heard, but with Eazy and Azuhl, we are split up into groups and then we all have a chance to say our say.
I was invited to their launch event held at Artscape on Thursday 16 October 2008. Before this launch, all I knew about this organisation was the fact that they ran the DJ Workshop at Artscape; I took pictures and this can be found on Flickr. Now that I attended the launch, i learned that they are usually invited to schools to talk to the youth to educate them on particular problem areas within that school.
As I am employed at an academic institution, I was really amused to learn how they came up with the name ‘Faculty of Hip Hop‘ so here it goes: As they used to run the hip hop show at UCT Radio, they saw Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering and so they also felt like being a Faculty.
Other organisations and people that supported the launch and gave a short speech included: Each One Teach One , Adam Haupt , Concious Connectionz . These people are all supporting the same or similar cause throughout the world including Germany and the USA.
So now that they are officially registered to serve the public, you are most likely to hear alot more of them and their works in future. Well done to you guys Tyrone, Ricardo, Richard, and the guys from Concious Connectionz Akio and Stephen and Anna and crew from EOTO.
